8 Survival Tips & Tricks for Living In Wilderness

Getting lost in the wilderness can be daunting, especially if you have little idea of the skills needed to survive. Whether you are lost for a short period, such as after a camping trip, or you have been lost for a long time, you need to have basic skills that will help keep you alive until help arrives or you find your way back. Here are some tips to help you get through it.

1. Do not move if it is dark Dangerous situations in the wilderness become amplified in the dark since you are unable to forestall any risk. One of the riskiest situations that people who get lost in the wilderness face is falling off cliffs. Tripping and falling can also cause serious injury. It is advisable to stay where you are if you are not in any immediate danger.

2. Do not panic, many people start to panic whenever they realize that they are lost in the wilderness. However, panicking can only complicate matters and make you do the wrong things. Instead, you should stay calm and plan on how to overcome the challenge. You will be able to think logically if you get hold of your nerves.

3. Mind the temperatures Try to find somewhere warm and dry to get you through the night. The desert can be extremely cold at night, as no vegetation sufficiently grows to offer insulation that could preserve warmth at night. Humans are unable to survive for more than three hours with no warmth. During the day, find a shade to help you stay cool. Meanwhile, you should be looking for a source of water to keep yourself hydrated.

4. Be careful what you eat When you are lost in the wilderness, it is possible to get very hungry. Satisfying the hunger may not be a priority when you are lost for a few hours. However, if you have been lost for days, you will have to find something to eat. You may be tempted to eat anything, including fruits from the little vegetation in the wild. If you do not know what the fruit is, do not attempt to eat it, as it could be poisonous.

5. Gather essential survival gear If you went camping or bush walking, you probably carried a few items. You can turn them into survival gear that will get you out of any situation. Some of the essential items you should carry include a source of fire, fixed blade knife,compass, first aid kit, extra para-cord, multi-tools, emergency blanket or sleeping bags, etc.

6. A fire will help you stay warm at night. It can even help you make a warm meal from any small animals and insects that you may catch. You should always carry a lighter or matches to make a fire.

7. A fixed blade knife is preferable to a credit card size knife because it is more resilient and durable. You can use it to cut large objects, rope, opening packages and trimming wood.

8. A compass is vital for navigation. Even during the day, you may become disoriented and unable to find your way without a compass. Ropes or para-cords can help you suspend things, such as food that wildlife may target. You can also use ropes for climbing, building emergency shelter, making splint for broken bones, etc.

These survival tips may not make you feel comfortable, but they can keep you alive. Try to improvise anything available if you do not have any of the items listed.
